Generator Selection and Considerations
What is a Generator?
In today’s world, it’s undeniable that we rely heavily on electricity to meet our essential needs. From lighting and heating to communication, transportation, nutrition, and hygieneelectricity plays a critical role in every aspect of daily life. In some sectors, uninterrupted power supply is absolutely vital, making generator use increasingly common.
This article provides guidance on what factors to consider when choosing a generator.
Determining Generator Power
Generators are usually a long-term purchase, often made only once. That’s why choosing the right one is especially important. The primary factor is selecting the generator based on its intended use and calculating the correct power requirement. Many generator manufacturers offer power assessment services to help with this.
Choosing the Right Engine
After determining power needs, it’s important to choose a suitable engine. In Turkey, common engines include European brands like Perkins and FPT Iveco, as well as Asian engines that are ideal for standby use. Price is naturally a major factor, but fuel consumption should also be considered.
Choosing the Installation Location
Once the generator and engine are selected, the next step is to determine where it will be installed. If placed indoors, the room must have proper air circulation. Fresh air must enter, and heated air should be expelled outside (not circulated back into the room). A hood system in front of the radiator can help direct hot air out. The exhaust fumes must also be properly ventilated outside. If the generator is placed outdoors, it should be in a secure area that prevents tampering, with doors locked at all times. It should be installed on level ground and ideally on a 20–25 cm high concrete base.
Choosing a Reliable Manufacturer
After these decisions, the next crucial step is selecting a trustworthy supplier. It’s essential to buy from a reputable, certified, and experienced manufacturer. Unfortunately, some companies that aren’t true manufacturers assemble generators from separate parts — buying engines and alternators from different sources, painting them, and selling them as new. Some even alter the labels to falsely display higher power ratings. These practices mislead customers and distort the market.
To avoid such issues, it’s important to choose the right company. We also recommend attending the factory load test of your generator before delivery to confirm that the labeled performance matches reality. Once confirmed, you can use your generator with full confidence.
